Vintage Folk Art Iron Weathervane: features a Man In an Amish Hat Smoking a Pipe while Fishing and catching a Bass while also Working !He is Very Busy! All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! Carpe Diem! Seize the day and find some pleasure in life during work.
I wish the piece were signed or dated, alas, I could find no markings. My best guess as to it’s age is 40-50 years. There is definite skill employed while made. The piece has dimension and expression. The man’s face, pipe, cattails, fishing rod are cut out with delicate care, but the piece is strong and sturdy.
The featured gentleman has got a scythe nearby among the cattails. I like to think he was out working and came upon a remote fishing spot and had to cut his way through to get a great fishing spot. Most likelyAmish or Mennonite made from an estate sale in Lancaster County PA- I live in the next county over, Berks, and am very familiar with their work and subjects to depict; this piece has it all.
My observation is that it was more recently used as a decorative garden object, as the base rod appears to have soil marks still present, and surface rust is more prominent there and may have been a longer rod, initially.
Matte black paint has some slight color variations that appear iridescent suggesting original, weathered oil paint.
Overall measurement is : 22.5” high x 29.5” tall. Very sturdy piece with original black paint and visible weld joints.
