Description
This is a wonderful old antique weathervane Circa 1900 that was made on Cape Cod Massachusetts. It has a wonderful original mottled green finish on one side and it looks like someone might have painted the other side black some time ago. It was definitely hand cut out of either tin or sheet iron and the arrow head and feathers are also hand cut out from tin or sheet iron. The way the whole thing is put together is a tribute to the ingenuity of American Folk Art. I was told that there was a guy who lived on the old side of the Cape Circa 1900 who made weathervanes of ships, sailboats, dories, Model T cars and an occassional rider on a horse. Although the metal is solid, the man on the horse, although still attached to the weathervane, is a little fragile in the attachment from years of use and just needs to be handled carefully. From time to time one of his weathervanes appears at auction. It measures from the tip of the heart arrow head to the tip of the feathers is 22". The rider and horse are about 9" tall. The horse is about 9" from hoof to hoof. It is really a wonderful piece of Folk Art and displays very nicely. A nice addition to any fine American Folk Art collection.
